Sounding The Wash (2025)

Sculpture and Soundscapes at Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (LWT), Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve and RSPB Titchwell

Responding to the landscape and based on conversations with LWT staff and research into the ecology of the site, this collaborative project resulted in a series of new sculptures and soundscapes co-produced with The Wash estuary, @sophiemarrit and @kathrynparsonsartist.

My Listening Device in the Plantation is woven from Great Fen-Sedge and Willow, ithas an amazing scent and is designed so you can put your head inside and hear the sounds of the ponds and creek recorded by @sophiemarrit.  A whole other world of communications - crackling, snapping of shrimp claws, rasping rapping from crabs, and a low pitch thudding from fish.

Black Stilt Lantern, is inspired by the Black Winged Stilt, a migratory bird that has recently started breeding at Gibraltar Point as climate change is causing wetlands in southern Europe to dry out. My stilt is filled with golden oyster shells from Gib Point that clink in the wind and shine in the sun.

Sea Urchin a Life: deck chair series explores our scientific and philosophical relationship to Sea Urchins. The text is embroidered on cotton printed with microscopic detail of The Wash, you can see the salt crystal’s in the water.
