Earth Maintenance, Holding Rain in the Headwater, Joya:Air Art and Environment Residency
Earth Maintenance – site responsive sculpture made on an art and environment residency in Joya Spain and developed for an installation at Gas Holder Park, Kings Cross. These works explore the properties of drought tolerant indigenous plants, the traditional knowledge of people who have worked with the land in the past and how this knowledge can be fused with new tech to create sustainable water systems. All the works are made with materials found on site. Joya Staff is made from an almond wood pole cut by a shepherdess, sardine tin, bone, and wild clay. Like Joya it is imbued with magic and fuses cultural and ecological knowledge. The Almond and Rosemary Ring and the Esparto Grass Ring are part of a series created from keystone plants. KX Staff is made from ironwood, cherry and clay found on site and carved with reference to London rainwater predictions. The Cow Parsely Ring performance took place in Regents Canal.
